Properly known as Steatite, Soapstone is the softest of the gem minerals. It is a massive (rocky or crystalline) form of talc that contains impurities which increase the stone's hardness and give it a greasy, almost soapy feel. Because of its softness Soapstone has been popular for carvings and intricate stonework for many centuries.
Magically, Soapstone is said to be a grounding and balancing stone that can help you keep your feet firmly on the ground even when you head is dreaming in the clouds. It is believed to be a good stone to keep in your home because of its metaphysical ability to create a calm, peaceful atmosphere and purify negative energy. Soapstone has the added practical benefits of being easy to get hold of and reasonably cheap, and can be found in a wide range of carved shapes suitable for symbolic magic. Soapstone elephants are a popular and widely available African carving, and made wonderful symbols for strength, stability and grounding. It is worth noting that many African stone carvers believe an elephant must always have a good view to keep him happy, so be sure your carving is facing a window or looking out into the room, where he will not be lonely!
